Title: The Flipped Classroom for Introductory Statistics - A Discussion and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The flipped classroom inverts the structure of a traditional lecture based classroom by having students participate in passive aspects of learning outside of the classroom and active components of learning within the classroom. The introductory statistics course for social science majors (and other non-math majors) may be well suited for the flipped pedagogy given the unique challenges faced by its instructors and students.

This talk will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this active learning model, as well as results of a small meta-analysis in which students in a flipped version of an introductory statistics course had significantly higher learning outcomes compared to students in a lecture-based introductory statistics course. The implications and limitations of this research will also be discussed.

In addition, we will be sharing insights and reflections regarding an experience flipping a PSYC 2022 Introduction to Statistics class for Psychology students here at York. We will discuss the inspiration, planning, and execution process involved from the perspective of a course director.
