Title: Introduction to Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The ability to synthesize data from existing studies to form a single overall conclusion can be an important skill for researchers. This presentation will provide a brief introduction and overview of statistical methods to synthesize different studies using meta-analysis models. Topics include the purpose of a meta-analysis, its procedure and how to interpret the results. An overview of the fixed and random effects models in the meta-analysis context will be introduced, along with discussion of how to choose between them and the benefits and limitations associated with each model. The presenter will conclude with a practical application of meta-analysis, highlighting a recently submitted paper examining the role of physical activity in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease in older adults.
