Title: Assessing mediation effects in psychological research: How important? For whom? At what level?

Abstract: Social scientists are often interested in assessing the mechanisms by which causal processes occur. Mediation analysis can be used to accomplish this task. In this talk I describe three developments in mediation analysis: (a) how to evaluate the practical/clinical (not just statistical) significance of mediation effects; (b) how to assess whether mediation effects vary across person-characteristics such as gender or age; and (c) how to discern whether mediation effects differ between- versus within-cluster (where clusters might be families, schools, or therapy groups). Each of these developments is related to empirical examples and to new software tools that facilitate their implementation in applied research.
