Title: Suppression Effects Within Current Psychology

Abstract: Statistical suppression is a three variable dynamic in which the association between a predictor and an outcome is strengthened by the adjustment of a third variable. Suppressors also tend to raise multiple R primarily by accounting for residuals within the model. Although many researchers may be puzzled by the presence of suppressors—and hence reluctant to include them within their analysis—they tend to improve precision and may offer unique insight into research phenomena. This talk will discuss the relation of statistical suppression to a classic statistical anomaly called Lord’s Paradox, types of suppression, the prevalence of suppression within current psychology literature, issues of interpretation, suppression observed within a clinical intervention, as well as its practical relevance.
